Levobupivacaine for Regional Anesthesia and Pain Management
نویسندگان
چکیده
Levobupivacaine is an enantiomer of racemic bupivacaine with a safe pharmacological profile. We present a review of levobupivacaine and its current clinical use in regional anaesthesia and pain management. The pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profile of levobupivacaine is discussed and a qualitative review of studies involving levobupivacaine for regional anaesthesia is presented. Comparisons of levobupivacaine with other local anaesthetic agents as well as studies looking at different doses of levobupivacaine are overviewed.

Update on local anesthetics: focus on levobupivacaine
In recent years levobupivacaine, the pure S (-)-enantiomer of bupivacaine, emerged as a safer alternative for regional anesthesia than its racemic parent. It demonstrated less affinity and strength of depressant effects onto myocardial and central nervous vital centers in pharmacodynamic studies, and a superior pharmacokinetic profile. Clinically, levobupivacaine is well tolerated in a variety ...
متن کاملThe primary mechanism of action of the spinal anesthetic ketamine is noncompetitive blocking of the NMDA ionophore. Widespread use of bupivacaine for pain management
Spinal anesthesia or regional anesthesia is a potent anesthetic procedure. Additional modalities have been sought to increase the duration of block in spinal anesthesia. Ketamine is an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor blocker that has an anesthetic effect when injected intrathecally and has a synergic effect with bupivacaine. Ketamine also has potent analgesic properties. The present study ...
متن کاملPost-Operative Continous Epidural Infusion in Geriatric Patients with Cardiopulmonary Co-Morbidities: Comparison between Ropivacaine and Levobupivacaine
With increasing life expectancy, improved healthcare and increasing prosperity, the proportion of elderly population is increasing throughout the world [1]. Altered redistribution kinetics as well as compromised drug clearance capacity render geriatric patients particularly vulnerable to drug-induced complications [2]. Regional anesthesia is preferred for the older patients because this form of...
متن کاملRegional Anesthesia for Painful Injuries after Disasters (RAPID): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND Lower extremity trauma during earthquakes accounts for the largest burden of disaster-related injuries. Insufficient pain management is common in resource-limited disaster settings, and regional anesthesia (RA) may reduce pain in injured patients beyond current standards of care. To date, no controlled trials have been conducted to evaluate the use of RA for pain management in a disa...
متن کاملCentral nervous system and cardiac effects from long-acting amide local anesthetic toxicity in the intact animal model.
With the development of the newer long-acting amide local anesthetics, ropivacaine and levobupivacaine, numerous animal studies of LA systemic toxicity have emerged. Because of the complex nature of the human response to LA intoxication, the task of designing and interpreting these animal studies of LA toxicity can be difficult. Accordingly, this report will review the selection of an animal mod...
